Carter’s fever never developed into anything, and the ER tests all came back negative. Therefore, we were set to move forward with eye surgery today. Once again, we got up bright and early for an early check-in at the hospital.
Carter played with all the toys while we were in pre-op. The nurses were in awe looking at Carter’s file and reading all that he had been through. The Child Life person from CHOC was the same one we had a couple weeks ago for Broviac removal surgery, so she remembered all the toys Carter likes to play with.
They gave him the usual Versed (amnesia med) to calm him down and take him back for surgery to get general anesthesia. The surgery took about an hour. They brought Matt and me back to the recovery room and we waited for Carter to wake up. We knew he’d be incredibly uncomfortable and want to rub his eyes right away, which was the case. He then fell back asleep on me for another hour, and we finally had to wake him up so we could leave. We wanted him to just keep his eyes closed, but this was difficult for him to do while he was awake.
The doctor said it will feel like he has sand in his eyes for 2-4 days; these are the stitches and they will slowly dissolve. He said Carter’s eyes will be bloody red for 10-14 days, then pink for another two weeks. They are bloody tears that come from his eyes, so we are trying to keep crying at a minimum. Matt and I have to be watching him constantly; he wants to rub his eyes so badly and cries that they hurt. We will be back to see the eye surgeon on Friday for a follow-up and make sure everything looks good.
Carter is such a champ! One minute he’ll be crying in pain and the next minute he has forgotten about it. Once we were home today, he said, “Mama, that was so fun at CHOC today and we got to see the doctors.” I said, “Carter, you don’t even know fun. Mama and Dada are going to show you so many fun things soon!”
We are SOOOO looking forward to celebrating Carter and our friend Allyson being cancer-free at the end of February! They will both be done with treatment and we are all going to Disneyland!! Now THAT will be fun!
That is the sweetest thing I have ever heard...that was so fun today at Choc. What a precious baby boy he is...like you said we will show you fun buddy and you will be blown away! ReplyDeleteCarter is such a sweetie and an incredible trooper! He is always amazing me with his strength and positive outlook on everything (same goes for the rest of the Kipp family as well). I'm so glad he was able to go through with the surgery so you could mark it off your list and look forward to a fun filled future. Disneyland sounds awesome! Looking forward to the end of February....we love you!
