We had Carter’s hearing test yesterday. One of his chemo drugs (Cisplatin) is notorious for causing hearing loss. We had the base-line test done during the first round of chemo, and they had told us we would be having a hearing test every other round throughout treatment. Well, yesterday was the only other hearing test we have received. I’m sure if we had noticed some significant hearing issues, we would have had the test done earlier.
It is nice that Carter is a little older now. The first test he had to be sedated and they said it’s not 100% accurate. It picks up the frequencies in your ears and determines your hearing capabilities. Yesterday, Carter went back into this tiny room at the Hearing Center and had to place pegs in a board when he heard birds chirping in his headphones. Also, they had him hold up the correct picture of the item they asked to see (ex: airplane). They found no hearing loss indicated. Often, Cisplatin affects the higher frequencies, but we were happy to see it was not the case with Carter.
I said to the hearing specialist, “So, when Carter says ‘What?’ to me and I’m a foot away from him and repeat myself four times, it’s just him being two?!” Now, I’m just smiling at him when he does it because I know he heard me the first time.
They are having us go back in another three months because they want to evaluate again six months post-chemo. Although, they did say most of the damage is usually done pretty immediate with chemotherapy. Carter thought they were great games to play, and another “fun” outing with Mom and Dad.
God is good! Praise His Holy Name!!! So grateful to hear that Carter didn't lose his hearing! He is growing like a weed, and starting to resemble the picture you have posted on the side bar that I am presuming was taken before or right at diagnosis. The only difference is he has lost that baby fat and is longer in the face. Glad to hear things are going well. Still keeping you all before God's throne of grace....right where we all should be. ReplyDelete"Selective" hearing affects all two year olds, indeed! We have that problem at our house too. Unfortunately Harris is in the habit of saying "huh" when he means "yes" so there's that fun repetition as well. So glad to hear Carter's ears were spared. We have another friend who was declared NED and in remission this week officially. THANK GOD everyone is kicking cancer to the curb! XOXO Daralyn
