Another MRI?!

Carter singing to Mom and Dad

A couple of weeks ago when we had talked to the doctors about Carter’s droopy eyelids, we also mentioned that they sometimes seemed to be going cross-eyed too. We figured this was also probably a side effect of the chemo, or maybe even cross-eyed from the droopiness. The ophthalmologist said he didn’t notice his eyes being cross-eyed, but he did make note of the droopiness of his left eyelid. Well, since we had a little break from chemo last week, the droopiness of Carter’s eyes did get much better. However, this made Matt and I notice the left eye being even more cross-eyed than we had noticed when the lid was droopy. We brought it up to the doctors again when we came into the hospital on Monday afternoon. They discussed it with the neurology group, and would like to have an MRI done of Carter’s brain tomorrow to rule out anything unusual. Ugh! Carter cannot eat or drink anything after midnight tonight, and sometime tomorrow (we’re hoping early in the morning) they will put him under general for an MRI. Nothing about this process is easy! Please keep good thoughts and prayers that everything is going to be clear with Carter’s brain, and that this is indeed a side effect of the chemo treatment (which will hopefully clear up fine post-chemotherapy).

The good news is Carter was feeling and acting great today. He ate four cups of pears and a few bags of pretzels, and munched on a couple other things here and there. The music therapist came back to visit (I’m sure apprehensively after Carter’s scene when he was leaving yesterday). But Carter did great today and had so much fun singing and playing instruments with him.

Obviously, it doesn’t look like we’ll be going home tomorrow now. We’re just hoping for a clear scan tomorrow and we’ll be discharged on Friday morning. Keep your fingers crossed!

  3. Fingers and toes are crossed. Nothing is easy is it. So great to hear he had a good day and I am sure you will get good news but its a drag to have to have an MRI to confirm. You are great parents staying on top of all these little things that come up. Have a good night and we will hope for an early test and more singing! Big hugs xoxo Cindy and John

  4. Hopefully since the droopiness is from the chemo the cross eyed left eye is too. I will keep you in my prayers that today is as simple as can be with great results!

  8. Last night we helped out with a group called Sunshine Kids. They are teenagers who have gone through (or are undergoing) cancer treatment. They are treated to many fun events, including last night, where they had pizza at the clubhouse and then went out for a round of golf and "cart riding". I have never met a group of teenagers who collectively radiated such a positive attitude, and many of them have had experiences similar to Carter's, beginning at a very young age. I told several of them about Carter and their reactions were SO positive and full of hope! We think of you each day--The Barlow Family (Kay's Texas friend)
