NG Tube Out!

Ask and you shall receive...no more itchy nose

Well, Carter and I had a terrible night. Due to the IVs beeping every hour or so and Carter seeming uncomfortable, we were up most of the night. The surgeon told us this morning Carter's Prograf level is high (this is one of the anti-rejection drugs he is on), and they still have to play with the dosage a bit. He also told us a side effect when it is high is insomnia, and possibly feeling uncomfortable. Just in case this is an every other night thing, I volunteered to stay at the hospital again tonight (so I can get on Carter's good night). Matt thinks it's just Carter acting tougher when it's just he and Dad. We'll see.

Carter got the usual dressing changes, blood work, tons of doctors and nurses looking and prodding at him all day. But everyone continues to be impressed by his recovery so far. The doctor came in tonight right before Carter was going to sleep and said, "let's take the NG tube out right now." This is the tube that goes through his nose directly into his stomach. Often, it is used to feed patients. Well, post-transplant it is actually used to suction things out of Carter's stomach to keep it empty. Matt and I found it pretty nasty all the stuff a stomach produces, even with no food in it! So, within a matter of minutes. Carter had the tube out. I'm sure it's a relief, he has been itching his nose the past few days. The only drainage tube left is the one on his right side. The surgeon said they will probably take that out tomorrow. We continue to be on our way! Yeah Carter!!

Thanks again to CdM Yogurt and everyone who went today!!

  1. So glad he got that ratty tube out. I can't imagine what comes out of the tum when it is empty. We are so thrilled that Carter is setting his own pace there; he is busy and has missed out on some prime summer activities, so he has to be in fighting shape ASAP! So very thankful he is doing so well. Keep it up!

He looks so much healthier since before his surgery so that liver must really like being in Carter Kipp. Swung by CDM yogurt yesterday and had a little cup. There were a couple of darling ladies with all their little girls...one of the Mommys is a good friend of yours! I hope you got a decent nights sleep last night...his progress is just amazing. I am praying he can have a little something to eat today...I am sure he is so ready! Big hugs to you and the Doctors that helped with your little miracle boy.xoxo Cindy and John
