Carter munching on Cheerios
Carter loved being out of bed with MomLast night everyone slept a little better. The nurse felt so bad from the night before, I think she put the IV pump alarms on silent. Carter just woke up a few times while they took his vitals.
In the morning, we ordered Cheerios for Carter. You have never seen someone so excited to eat. As he was putting his hand to his mouth with some Cheerios, his hand was shaking. Poor guy! Today he ate almost two little boxes of Cheerios and a tiny bit of quesadilla (mostly the tortilla). Earlier in the day he was telling jokes and laughing and it was the most like himself he has been since surgery. Matt and I were so happy.
As the day went on, we became more concerned about Carter's heart rate. It started to go up last night while he was sleeping, and continued throughout the day. Post-transplant, his heart rate has been between 90-100. And today it was between 135-185. During his nap (in a restful state), his heart rate was 140. Also, some of Carter's liver enzyme levels have been up (which is not good). If they are up again tomorrow, the doctors will do an ultrasound. We're hoping they will trend downward. We cannot have Carter's body reject this liver!! Think good thoughts!! They told us this process was a roller-coaster, and I guess we have just been spoiled so far. He's been doing great, we just need that to continue!
To end on a good note, Carter had his first poop this evening since he has been eating solid foods! This is a big deal. It was all processed in this new organ and worked it's way through his re-routed intestine. I'm staying at my aunt and uncle's tonight and Matt texted me from the hospital to tell me. He said he has never been more excited to change a diaper! Yeah Carter!
You go Carter. Your mom always did love a good "poop" talk. Ha Ha. You guys are great. Keep up the good spirits. Everyone is just thinking and praying for you all. Get some sleep tonight and get that heart rate down.

ReplyDeleteCheerios and poop! Hooray. That's pretty big stuff. We are praying that Carter's body embraces this liver and is just working out the initial kinks. All will turn out fine, it just may be like you said, a few ups and downs at the start. He is amazing! Lots of love to you guys. Daralyn

Great news about the pooping...amazing really when you think about it. The Doctors did say there will be some ups and downs so the heart rate and liver elevations are just bumps because this liver seems very happy in Carter! So great to see Carter out of bed and eating Cheerios! Hope that his heartrate goes down or already has gone down. Keep fighting, Carter - you are on the final leg of beating this cancer!

Praise God Carter finally got some real food!!! Praise God again that he pooped. Father make this new liver one with Carter's body. Let it function normally without complications in the mighty name of Jesus. Return Carter's heart rate & blood pressure to normal healthy levels in the mighty name of Jesus. I thank You Father for the progress Carter has made and I praise You and thank You for the completion of Carter's healing. You are awesome Daddy!
