ANC Zero Again…

Our Greek God eating his chicken, pita and hummus!

Carter had a fever last night of 101.4, so they started the antibiotics and took blood cultures again. Since our 72 hour window had passed since the last time, they have to start it all over again. His counts were low again today too, with his ANC being 0. His chest x-ray was good. There were a couple spots the doctor is not concerned with, and no pneumonia. Around 10:00am he spiked another fever of around 103. They gave him some Tylenol and it went away for the rest of the day (and hopefully for good). His hemoglobins were low, so he had a blood transfusion. He was in good spirits and played, smiled and watched movies all day. He ate pretzels and Cheerios all day too, with a cup of pears and (of course) chicken, pita and hummus for dinner! And last night he had a few strawberries too, which we were so glad to see. Carter’s weight is up about 2.5-3 pounds from when we came in. Yeah! A lot of this is probably water, because our little guy was so dehydrated from vomiting. We’re so glad he’s eating and taking his oral meds and keeping them down, and he is looking and acting so much better. We just need those counts to go back up!...which will hopefully make the fever go away too.

We talked to the doctor at UCLA today, and Friday is not looking promising. It is too risky to put Carter through that right now. We are going to hope they can squeeze us in for the MRI on Tuesday and Carter will be better by then. This will just delay Round 4 one day. We’re hoping this all works out. The oncologist at CHOC suggested it, so they understand the importance of getting this scan done.

These days keep us on our toes. It’s a lot of hurry hurry and wait. Now, we just wait for Carter’s body to bounce back from this para flu and chemo and we can move forward.

  1. Kara & Matt, the waiting & watching is sooo hard. It was good that you stayed at the hospital instead of being caught at home with the fever. The stress of the ER & being re-admitted is always difficult.
I got a kick out of Bennett's video Boxing...Kyle was just doing the same thing & I was amazed how focused they are!! Carter will be joining the Wii group soon...he is truly the Fighter. Love, Cathy Sukiasian
