Still a tough day

Carter and Matt went in early to CHOC this morning for blood work. We also wanted Carter to get another dosage of the anti-nausea drug that lasts three days, so they ended up having to wait around for a doctor to place the order. They spent the whole first half of the day at CHOC and it still seems like it was the world’s longest day at home.

Carter wanted to be held and was whiny a lot of the afternoon. His appetite is limited, but we are suggesting anything and everything to eat because he isn’t gagging when we mention food (like he often does when he is extremely nauseated). Hopefully, a healthy appetite is just days away. His hair is definitely coming out again, and I’ve noticed his eyebrows and eyelashes have thinned a bit too.

When Carter was walking around the family room playing this evening, he fell down. It seems like his falling down spells had gotten fewer when we had a break from chemo for a while. It really does just wear at his joints and lower extremities. We think he twisted his ankle. He didn’t want to put pressure on it and was complaining about it the rest of the night. This has happened before and in the morning it seems fine. Hopefully, this is the case tomorrow morning.

UCLA called after they received Carter’s blood work results from CHOC. Carter is pretty dehydrated, so we’ll be doing an IV saline tomorrow morning from home. We are trying to encourage Carter to drink, eat popsicles, ice, whatever we can to hydrate his body. It’s hard when they don’t understand the consequences or the importance of it all. Instead, he just thinks it’s another thing we are trying to make him do (like taking meds). And he is being two and testing out our limits. It just makes it tiring and frustrating for everyone.

The good news is Carter is not vomiting at all, and we got all his meds in today. And tomorrow is another day!

  1. Hang in there! I know you're taking it one day at a time... but it's still so tough. He'll be back to his old self really soon! I am praying for him and for the rest of the Kipp family.
