Our ham always trying to make us laugh!This morning after getting Bennett off to school and feeding Davis, I headed over to CHOC to relieve Matt for a little bit…but mostly, to give Carter hugs. When I got there, the nurse said Carter’s nasal swab came back negative and he was no longer in isolation. I asked Carter if he wanted to go on a walk, and his eyes lit up. He was swinging his arms and strutting around the oncology floor. He’s so funny as he was waving and blowing kisses to all the nurses, and running towards the doctors as we saw them. He remembers everyone’s names as these have been his friends for the past five months.
Before Matt left the hospital, I asked him if they had been doing GCSF (the drug that we do at home after chemo to boost Carter’s blood levels back up) for the past couple days at CHOC. Matt said he didn’t think they had. Carter’s ANC is zero and his body cannot fight an infection right now, and he has one. If there is any time for this drug to be crucial, it is now! So, Carter and I walked to the case manager’s office to double check. She said they hadn’t and it must have been overlooked. UCLA called us and said CHOC had also forgotten to draw blood to check his Prograf level this morning. This is after we had made a big change in the dosage the day before and it was important to be checking it. Also, Matt has had to give each new nurse on every shift change a copy of our med sheet from UCLA. He asked why he has to keep providing a copy and what happens to the sheet from the previous nurse. It’s so annoying to have to stay on top of things when we are supposed to be relying on them for Carter’s care. Clearly, you can never get too comfortable or things slip through the cracks. We are very appreciative of all the doctors and nurses, but know we have to stay attentive as well.
It really saddens me to hear all the disconnect going on in the hospital...and with that, you are in one of the BEST around! Carter is sooooooo lucky to have diligent parents to look after him & stay on top of things..Go Carter!!!!!

You guys are doing THE BEST job of taking care of Carter and always will. Keep up the outstanding work Kipp family!! We are truly amazed by you and all you are doing and having to remember on a daily/hourly basis. Still sending our prayers for more sleep, no infection, no illness, and quick recovery for Carter!!!

Well the report sounds like you are making progress. Love the bowl on his head...what a crazy little guy. You guys are so amazing...seem to know more than the doctors and nurses. ReplyDeleteNEVER GET TOO COMFORTABLE!!!!!! We have had too many serious slip ups from medical staffing. It's just too bad it has to be this way. NEVER STOP DOUBLE CHECKING!!!
ReplyDeleteWhat a handsome looking clown! Carter is looking good inspite of that infection, which has been served it's eviction notice and must leave in Jesus' mighty name. Father touch the doctors & nurses @ CHOC and wake them up. This is a good hospital now make it a godly hospital. Put an diligent urgency upon the staff to pay closer attention to patient's charts and needs in Jesus' mighty name. Bless Matt & Kara with Your joy, but Father bless them doubly for being such good parents to the angel You have given them to care for. Many hugs and many blessings beloved Kipps!
ReplyDeleteThank goodness you guys are such amazing advocates for Carter - how frustrating to have to re-explain each shift and remind them to give him the proper drugs?! UGH. Hang in there, and he will be better in no time. Keep fighting, Carter!

ReplyDeleteOur MOPS group started up again today in Huntington Beach, so at about 11:30 a.m., prayers were said by approx. 40 women (all Moms!) for Carter and your family to just have the energy to keep up the fight and for this infection to BE GONE!!! We'll keep you on our prayer list weekly, and you're all in my thoughts and prayers daily.
